With the energetic sequences of movements it is an aerobic form of exercise that builds heat in the body and basically makes you feel hot and sweaty!! Your body eliminates toxins through sweat so the hotter and sweatier the better the cleansing!&lt;br /&gt;The strong rhythmic breathing and abdominal locks or Bandas play a crucial role in generating this internal heat. Basically you lift the pelvic floor muscles and pull your tummy button in during your practise which engages the necessary abdominal and pelvic muscles to create core stability. On an energetic level, these locks help to keep the heat and energy in the body. With the energetic sequences of movements astanga is an aerobic form of exercise that builds heat in the body.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;The strong rhythmic breathing and abdominal locks or &lt;i&gt;Bandas&lt;/i&gt; play a crucial role in generating this internal heat.  Basically you lift the pelvic floor muscles and draw the naval towards the spine which engages the necessary abdominal and pelvic muscles to create core stability.On an energetic level, these locks help to keep the heat and energy in the body.Your body eliminates toxins through sweat -detoxing and cleansing. The practice creates a feeling of warmth, deep relaxation and lightness.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;I arrive early at the CWA hall so I can practice and warm the hall up before you arrive.  This Sunday we had two heaters on and we got hot!  It’s a beautiful space to practice in and a great way to start your Sunday.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Bring a blanket for your relaxation. We have too many family commitments and my hubby's work taking him off to Melbourne. It's just not all fitting in easily so something has to go....and unfortunately it's this class. July. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-AU"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;The classes will run every week for a 10 week term from 10.45 - midday. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;The cost will be $15 per session and I'll ask you to book and pay for the term in advance.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-AU"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;You &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;can sta&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;rt the classes after your 6 week check up, usually a bit later after a cesarean.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt; The idea is to meet at the Umina Beach Surf club cafe, Sydney Avenue, every Tuesday morning 10.30 to midday during school term time. Aafke will be there too and if she can't make it I'll come. A chance for like minded souls to get together and have a chat. Obviously older siblings are very welcome too. There is a grassy area to run around. It's not fenced from the carpark though but there isn't often a lot of traffic down there.  See you soon. These workshops complement the pregnancy yoga classes and it is recommended that you attend at least a couple of the classes before the workshop. These dates are flexible and we will do our best to accommodate everyone. I'm thinking of Tuesday afternoons from 5 - 5.45 pm for 4-7 year olds and 6 - 6.45 pm  for 8 - 12 year olds. Classes will cost $10 and will be run as a course over the school term. They will be held at the Peninsula Yoga Centre in Woy Woy. I'm really interested to hear if these times will work for you so if you are interested please let me know. It was a cold, wet, windy morning when we all gathered in the dark at the Umina Beach Surf Club. The coldest October day in 17 years apparently. Luckily we were inside unlike some of the teams down in Sydney. Fabulous to watch the waves breaking on the beach as the day dawned. John was at the Yoga expo the week before and discovered our little team of six was the talk of the town as we've managed to raise so much despite being only a few! We've raised a mighty $2672 so far and can still take donations for the next month. The total raised by the Australia Yoga aid event has almost reached $130 000!! A great effort and all for childrens charities. We enjoyed our 108 sunsalutes and the energy we created carried us through relatively effortlessly!Thanks to all who have donated and supported us. A recent study of more than 100 women at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital suggests it is primarily clinicians, rather than mothers, who are behind the nation's soaring caesarean rate.&lt;br /&gt;Private hospital patients are more likely to have caesarean births (40.3% compared with 27.1% in public hospitals), ‘yet the women seeing private obstetricians recorded the same tolerance of risks and were more concerned about the safety of the baby so it shows that doctors can greatly affect the outcome," Hannah Dahlen, a spokeswoman for the Australian College of Midwives.&lt;br /&gt;I have been told that the most popular obstetrician on the central coast has a caesarean rate of 80%. The rate of caesarean at the private hospital where he works is now at least 65%! These rates are well above the World Health Organization’s recommendation that caesarean sections should only be necessary for fewer than 10% of women, with 15% being an upper limit for surgical intervention. They are also higher than a number of other similar overseas countries.&lt;br /&gt;Who these caesareans actually benefit is clearly in question. There are health risks to both mother and baby but these are not widely advertised or known. That some women are choosing caesarean section strongly suggests women are not adequately informed of these risks.&lt;br /&gt;The cost of caesareans is at least twice as much as a natural birth. That’s a lot of unnecessary pressure on already stretched medical services. If the caesarean rate rises to 39 per cent - which many experts fear will happen soon - it will mean thousands more surgical births every year.&lt;br /&gt;Of course in a medical emergency caesareans save lives.&lt;br /&gt;The question is why are caesareans being used inappropriately? Fear of litigation is definitely a factor. Doctors are sued for not performing caesareans but not when they do. Lack of information is another factor. Women need to be educated about the choices available to them and given accurate information so they can make informed decisions.&lt;br /&gt;A positive step from the ‘top’ is the Rudd Government’s development of a national action plan for maternity services. It published a discussion paper on improving maternity services in Australia in September this year. The paper states that -‘Women and their babies must be the focus of maternity care. They should be able to feel they are in control of what is happening during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, based on their individual needs and having discussed issues fully with their care providers. In order for women to feel this control, we must recognise that pregnancy and childbirth, while requiring quick and highly specialised responses to complications, are normal physiological processes, not an illness or disease.’ - Hurray!!&lt;br /&gt;At a local level, the Peninsula offers many important services to help women enjoy a healthy pregnancy take control of their birth experience and approach motherhood with confidence and support. Local midwifery groups are working to support women’s choices in birth. ‘The Birth Circle’, an energetic, active group of new mums and pregnant ones run by a Umina mum and local midwife, offers a number of services as well as the all important social network for new parents. They explore the many options available to birthing families, whilst supporting each other’s choices and offer resources that contribute to an understanding of alternatives.&lt;br /&gt;Women want to have control over their births and have different options open to them including homebirths, birthing centres, continuous care, water births and natural pain relief. Government funding is needed to make these support services affordable and available in all areas of Australia. Social attitudes need to change and we must take steps to develop a positive perception of birth. It is a natural event. It should be a wondrous, empowering experience for women and approached with confidence not fear. Women must make it clear that they want to reverse the current trend of unnecessary caesarean births. We start every session with a chance to share news and stories and discuss any problems or issues. Someone might have back ache having spent too long on their feet at work the day before or be feeling anxious about an aspect of the labour. My prepared class plan is usually out the window by the end of our chat and I mentally redesign the class to address the issues that have come up. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;A moment or two to pause and bring ourselves into the present, letting go of the past and thoughts of the future, trying to learn to exist in the here and now. A great lesson for labour when just being with the breath is the best thing you can do. A fabulous lesson for life, particularly with children when impermanence is truly the nature of all things! &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;We breathe deep breaths and let the tension leave the body. Sitting or lying comfortably we bring energy and oxygen into the body and to the unborn baby. Focus on the breath is a major part of each session. Some weeks we think about the pelvic floor and the breath, letting go of these muscles as we exhale in preparation for the birth. (Come to the post natal classes to reclaim the pelvic floor!) Other weeks we try ways to maximise the exhalation and practise using it as an antidote for birth pains. Relaxing and letting go with the exhalation is the key! &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;We use simple yoga asanas and focus on posture to maintain good alignment in the pelvis. This usually solves a multitude of aches and pains and helps the baby to get itself into a good position for birth. A thought or two on contractions and a cat pose to help you stay calm and centred. Lot’s of positions for your birth…little ideas and thoughts here and there. Something will be useful and stick in your mind and come to you when you feel like you need to try something different. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Perhaps a few gentle pregnant sun salutes to get the energy moving and some massage practise with homework to take home to hubby. Yes,of course you should expect lots of massage while you are pregnant and if you manage to come to the birth rehearsal workshops too, we can show him other ways to get involved and what to expect before, during and after the birth. All very relaxed, informal and friendly with plenty of cake and time to lie down! But that’s another story….back to the weekly class… &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;We finish the sessions with a long lie down, tucked up under your blanket with pillows under your knee. Comfy and warm we think about the breath again, the baby listening to your slow relaxed heart beat, relaxes with you. Time to blow away the cobwebs and shake off the dust. Time to spring clean ourselves and to flow with the rising energy levels.&lt;br /&gt;Spring is the perfect time to explore your astanga practise. With the energetic sequences of movements it is an aerobic form of exercise that builds heat in the body and basically makes you feel hot and sweaty!! Your body eliminates toxins through sweat so the hotter and sweatier the better the cleansing!&lt;br /&gt;The strong rhythmic breathing and abdominal locks or Bandas play a crucial role in generating this internal heat. Basically you lift the pelvic floor muscles and pull your tummy button in during your practise which engages the necessary abdominal and pelvic muscles to create core stability. On an energetic level, these locks help to keep the heat and energy in the body. We run the workshops at Umina beach surf club where we have fantastic views out over the ocean to Lion island and Barrenjoey lighthouse. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;There are two local surf clubs along our long stretch of beach. Ocean beach and Umina beach. Umina beach surf club is at the end of Sydney avenue, past Umina beach public school and following the signs to the holiday park. They are my blessings in this life and often a serious spiritual challenge!! I trained as a doula with Michel Odent and worked closely with midwives and health visitors in London.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;"&gt;Now living in this beautiful land 'down under' and starting to teach a little here on the Central Coast.
